The perfect side or appetizer to any meal are these super easy and yummy Cheese Straws. When I make them they make the house smell divine and the kids just love them! Because I use Puff Pastry they are nice and flaky with great flavor from the cheese and seasonings added to it.
Cheese Straws with a Kick!
- Frozen Puff Pastry (thaw 1 sheet on the counter for at least 30 minutes before starting)
- 1/2 cup Italian Cheese Mix
- 1/2 cup Mozzarella Cheese
- Thyme (can use fresh or dried leaves)
- Red Seasoning if you like a little extra kick
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbsp water
Preheat your oven to 400 degrees. My frozen puff pasty has 2 sheets in it. For this I only used 1 sheet – thawed on the counter for at least 30 minutes. I like to prepare this on some parchment paper that I can easily transfer to a baking sheet. So I place the Puff Pastry on a sheet of parchment paper.
Crack the egg into small bowl and add the water. whisk together with a fork then brush over the puff pastry. Discard any remaining extra egg. Next spread the cheeses evenly over the pastry.
Sprinkle on the Thyme- I used about 1/4 of a tsp. of dried thyme.
For a little extra kick I used Red Seasoning – just sprinkled over everything. My son told me next time to add more because he liked it.
Using a pizza cutter cut into strips – I think I got about 12 strips out of the one sheet. Grab a hold of each end and begin turning in opposite directions to make a twist. Next time I make this I may use a rolling pin first to press the cheese and seasonings into the pastry.
Place on baking sheet (with parchment paper for easy cleanup) – evenly spaced – and bake for 10-12 minutes or until nice and golden.
Once out of the oven I easily transfer the parchment paper to my counter – let the twists cools for just a moment and then cut in half (if they are extra long like mine. Serve warm or at room temperature.
