I have to be honest, when I was challenged this month to make Donuts I was nervous. I have never in my life made Donuts so I felt very out of my comfort zone. Then I remembered how I often make my kids Scones (In Utah we call them scones – other places may call them fry bread?) . I make our scones covered in cinnamon and sugar and they remind me of Donuts. So I thought I would try making Donuts going that route. That is where I came up with these super simple and easy chocolate glazed donuts!
The donuts are made with premade dough and are easy to fry up. The chocolate glaze is amazingly simple as well!
Easy Chocolate Glazed Donuts
Ingredients:
- Rhodes (or any other brand) frozen rolls
- vegetable oil
- Cooking spray
- 1 Cup Powdered Sugar
- 4 Tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 1 tsp. Vanilla
- 3-5 Tbsp. milk
Spray a cookie sheet with cookie spray and then place your frozen rolls onto the cookie sheet. Cover with some saran wrap. I also spray my saran wrap with cooking spray so it doesn’t stick. About 45 minutes later while the rolls are still cold poke a hole through the middle. I make the hole with my fingers and make it about 2 fingers wide. Recover with your saran wrap.
Once the rolls have double they are ready to fry. The time it takes to double depends on how warm your home is. Mine only took about an hour or two because it is warm here.
In a big pan heat your oil. I like the oil to be about 1 1/2 inches deep. If you had a thermometor I think 350 degrees would be a good temperature. I don’t have a thermometor so I just put a piece of dough in there and when it starts frying up I know I am good to go. Also if they are frying way to fast you may want to lower your temperature a bit. Just fry on each side until browned then drain onto a paper towel.
The glazes makes up really quick. Put the powdered sugar, cocoa powder and vanilla in a bowl and mix together. Slowly add a Tbsp of milk in at a time until you get the desired consistency for your glaze. For me that was 3 Tbsp. If you accidentally put in more you can add 1/4 cup powdered sugar and 1 Tbsp cocoa powder at a time to get it back to the consistency you would like (I have had to do this a couple of times)
Dip each donut into your glaze and swirl it around a bit.
I placed the donuts on a cookie sheet with cooling racks since the glaze would drip off a little. While the glaze is still wet add some sprinkles, nuts or even coconut!
I was really surprised with how nicely these turned out and the kids loved them as much as me!
